World War II
.World War II lasted from September 1st, 1939 until September 2nd, 1945. World War II was a time of big events, including the first and only use of the atomic bomb, the Holocaust and Pearl Harbor. The war started in September of 1939 when the Nazi's attacked Poland. It wasn't until the bombings of Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941 that the US got involved and declared war on Japan.
On December 7th, 1941, Japan sent planes over to Hawaii. The planes flew over the Naval base Pearl Harbor and launched a surprise attack. The attack happened on Sunday morning when there were no trainings and many people were at church, so guard was down. Over 200 Japanese planes bomb the entire area including buildings, ships and aircrafts. Over 3,000 people were killed in the attack and 180 aircrafts were destroyed along with the majority of the ships being held in the harbor. The attack ruined all relations that the US ans Japan had and led to years of war.
However in August of 1945 Presidnt Harry Truman decided he had enough of the war. He told Japan they had a few days to surender or else the US would be dropping an atomic bomb on them. The US had the capability of an atomic bomb thanks to an undercover operation that began taking place before the war started known as the Manhattan Project. After Japan did not surrender, August 6th, 1945 the worlds first atomic bomb was dropped. The bomb was dropped on the city of Hiroshima. The bomb wiped out 90% of the city and killed 80,000 people on impract. Thousands more died from radiation poisoning shortly after. After the first bomb was dropped, President Truman then asked Japan one more time if they would surrender. Japan once again did not comply so the US was forced to drop another bomb. This second bomb was dropped over the city of Nagasaki. The second bomb killed over 40,000 making the death toll of the bombing over 120,000. On August 15th, 1945 Japan officially surrendered. The war then ended less than a month later. Wether the US should of dropped the bomb or not is a very debatable topic within the world even today, 72 years later, but one thing is for sure, it got the war over much more quickly than if the US had continued to fight.
