Drones and our Military
Technology has come such a long way over the last hundred year and even within just the last few years. Years ago nobody could of ever guessed we would be flying drones around our neighborhoods just as an everyday fun activity. Nowadays kids can go to the story a buy a drone from anywhere between $50 and thousands of dollars with over 770,00 people privately owning drones. Although many people see drones in households now, there are other uses for them.
The military has been using drones to oversee missions and spy for years now. This month though, the military will begin to test un piloted aircrafts to go and resulply troops in the field. The military calls this new technique "pilot in a box" because it is controlled solely by a tablet. If all goes well, this will allow the military to put supplies in dangerous locations for soldiers without putting a pilot in harms way.
Flint Water Crisis
Many have heard about the Flint water crisis. In 2014, Flint, Michigan changed its water source to the Flint River. The water was not properly treated which lead to over 100,000 residents at risk of lead poisoning. Residents of Flint were instructed to only drink out of water bottles or other filtered water until all pipes were replaced. All the pipes are currently being replaced and water is not at an acceptable level but because they are still working on pipes, residents were asked just to be safe to wait to drink water from the city until all pipes were fixed. All pipes are expected to not be replaced until at least 2020 leaving people drinking only bottled water for the next 3 years. Just this week a judge approved a $97 million settlement to replace the water lines in Flint. The money is set to come from both state funds and federal funds. The deal also opens 9 bottled water distribution centers, so people are not having to pay for their bottled water. Residents of Flint know this settlement does not solve all of their problems but one small victory is very big for them in this situation.
